Does Oil Pulling Work For Teeth Whitening? My Experience

I had heard about it everywhere and seen so many health gurus gawk about it’s benefits and how oil pulling is a “must do” in their morning routines, but, I guess I just wasn’t convinced. Actually, I think I was a little turned off by the idea of gargling oil for 20 minutes every morning and couldn’t really imagine it doing much. However, after reading, yet another health and wellness blogger rave about it, I decided to give oil pulling a try, and the results have been amazing!

What is oil pulling and how does it work? 

Oil pulling is a traditional folk remedy that involves swishing oil in the mouth to clean and detoxify teeth and gums. It works to rid your mouth of bacteria and toxins by swishing around oil which, essentially, “grabs” onto all the bacteria and pulls it out. Once you are done, you spit out the oil along with all the bacteria and toxins that it has absorbed. Make sure to rinse your mouth well with water to ensure everything gets out. 

Oil pulling is said to have a neverending list of benefits from curing illnesses and diseases, healing gums, whitening teeth, preventing cavities, reducing headaches, clearing skin, clearing sinuses, improving overall oral health, curing hangovers, and so much more. 


What kind of oil can I use and how much do I use?

Oil pulling can be done with any high quality oil of your choice such as coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil, sesame oil and more. You should use about 1 tablespoon.

When should I oil pull and for how long?

Oil pulling works best right away in the morning before you do anything else (yes, before that morning coffee). You should oil pull anywhere between 15-30 minutes. I personally do it for 15minutes while I check emails, make breakfast, read some blog posts etc.

My 2 weeks of oil pulling experience:

I often hear that your oral health represents your overall health on the inside as the mouth is the entry to the rest of the body. This was what finally got me to give oil pulling a try.  I said to myself, okay, I’ll try it for 3 weeks and if the results don’t give me enough reason to continue, I won’t…….Well, let’s just say, I continued.

The main thing I have noticed is whiter teeth. After 2 weeks, my teeth were significantly more white, which was quite a pleasant surprise. Unfortunately, I can’t vouch for any of it’s disease curing or sinus clearing powers as I don’t have any of those issues for it to cure.

That being said, I get cavities very easily and bad teeth runs in my family, which means I have to take very good care of my own teeth in order to avoid such problems. Oil pulling is helpful as it gets rid of the bacteria deep down in my teeth and gums that may lead to cavities and other problems. It’s also helpful because I tend to slack on the whole flossing department….

In terms of oils, I’ve been switching between Cold Pressed Coconut Oil and Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Every morning, the first thing I do is take about a tablespoon and pop it in my mouth. I swish it around for about 15 minutes (yeah, 30 minutes is just to much for me haha) and then spit it out and rinse with some water. I admit, I wasn’t very into keen on the idea of having to do this for 15 minutes straight, but I will tell you it really isn’t so bad at all. I use the time to prepare breakfast or answer emails.

It may not be for everyone, but I highly suggest that everyone tries it for at least 2 weeks to see if you can reap any of it’s amazing benefits!
